ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING FILLING OF VACANCY ON RANCHO SANTA FE SCHOOL DISTRICT GOVERNING BOARD
On September 13, 2017, Board Member Marti Ritto resigned from the District’s Governing Board. The Governing Board approved moving forward with filling the vacancy on the Board through a provisional appointment process as authorized by the Education Code. Subsequently, five qualified candidates were interviewed and the Governing Board voted unanimously to appoint Mr. Jon Yonemitsu as a Board member.
On November 15, 2017, a private citizen filed a petition calling for a special election with the San Diego County Superintendent of Schools. Today, the District was notified by the County Superintendent that the petition is legally sufficient. As a result, the provisional appointment made by the Board of Trustee’s is terminated and the District has been ordered to conduct a special election to fill the vacancy on the Governing Board. The District is responsible for the cost of the election which the County Registrar of Voters estimates will be between $40,000 – $80,000.
The special election is scheduled to take place on April 24, 2018 and will be conducted wholly as an all-mail ballot election. All registered voters in the District will be mailed ballots for the election by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters. The candidate who is elected during this special election will serve as a Board Member from May through November 2018.
