Grade 6 and 7 (Elective) *not available in 7th grade if taken in 6th grade

Explore the principles of rocketry and learn how to build rockets from the ground up. Students will begin by building straw rockets and examine how thrust, fin design, and launch angle affect their flight. They will move into paper rocket designs and then build a variety of bottle rockets launched with an air compressor. They will also learn how to build recovery systems to insure safe landings.

Grade 8 (Can only enroll if taking FTC Robotics program after school)

Explore the principles of rocketry and learn how to build rockets from the ground up. Students will begin by building straw rockets and examine how thrust, fin design, and launch angle affect their flight. They will move into paper rocket designs and then build a variety of bottle rockets launched with an air compressor. They will also learn how to build parachute and other recovery systems to insure safe landings. Students will also examine rocket trajectories and use their data to hit a target. Finally, students will investigate the use of Estes and other chemical powered rocket engines using single and multiple stage rocket designs.
