Scripps Ocean Partnership
The Rancho Santa Fe (RSF) School District has a 20+ year-old commitment to ocean education and conservation. Students study the ocean year-round, focusing on marine habitats, some of which are featured in the MARE curriculum MARE (Marine Activities Resources & Education), a K-8, inquiry-based ocean science program that comes out of UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science. Students explore earth, life and physical science, as well as, language arts, music, mathematics and the visual arts, all through the lens of marine science. Ocean Week at RSF was pioneered in 1993 by teacher Stacey Halboth, who for years has tirelessly championed ocean conservation and global literacy efforts.
Currently, the Scripps Ocean Partnership (SOP), under the coordination efforts of MARE co-developer, Roberta Dean, connects RSF with the Birch Aquarium at Scripps, Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO), and the larger ocean education community. This unique affiliation creates strong connections between the cutting–edge research conducted at SIO, local environmental and marine activities, and the RSF school community. This program is the result of decades of dedication by RSF administrators, classroom teachers, and staff in annual planning and implementing of ocean science activities in and out of classrooms, the RSF Education Foundation and their on-going vision for innovative education, SIO’s recognition of the importance of sharing cutting-edge research with pre-college students and educators, and the Scripps family for their long-term support for ocean education.
