K-5 Elective Wheel
All students in Grades K-5 will spend a series of weeks in a music class. Each grade has an individualized learning plan designed in conjunction with the California State Standards for Music Instruction. Although the content differs according to grade, the areas of concentration for each grade are: artistic perception, creative expression, historical and cultural context, aesthetic valuing, and connection and application in lifestyle.
Students will be able to practice their instruments and play as a group. We will prepare for scheduled concerts, competitions, and festivals, but will also be the “band for hire” for other school functions that need musical support! Never played an instrument? No problem! We will help you pick one out and before you know it, you will be a pro.
Bands like Cold Play and The Beatles and genres from Rock-n-Roll to Country have all heavily utilized the guitar. This elective will teach you how to play guitar. In just weeks, you will be able to play along with your favorite artists.
There is not a more important instrument to understand and play than the piano. Join this exciting elective and begin your journey to learning music fundamentals. Because each student has his/her own piano, whether you have played for several years or never touched one, you are welcome to join this class.
The RSF Education Foundation and the Rancho Santa Fe School District offer many opportunities for students in grades 4-8 students to grow as a musician.*
Students will learn:
To play a variety of instruments
Perform in various concerts and festivals
Band and Orchestra meet before school in the mornings at 7:00 a.m. or 7:45 a.m. two to three times a week, depending on which group your student joins. Middle School students may enroll in additional band electives during the school day. Drumline will meet Monday afternoons at 3:15 p.m.
In addition to the weekly practices and periodic performances, the band/orchestra is a great place to make friends and learn many skills (i.e. listening, teamwork, on-stage performance, etc.). Students will need to purchase/rent their instruments and pay for additional private lessons on their own.
For more information, please contact our band teacher by using the “Parents” or “About Us” menus on the District website or attend an informational meeting on Tuesday, September 6 at 6:00 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Students will have the opportunity to sign up for band/orchestra as well as try out different musical instruments.
* Some 3rd grade students may be accepted into the band program following an interview with the parent and student to determine readiness. Students may apply to enter the strings program from 1st grade.
